The FDA has approved a clinical study of the Implantable Miniature Telescope in patients with age-related macular degeneration who were previously implanted with an IOL, according to a VisionCare press release.

The implant, already FDA approved for AMD patients older than 65 years who have not had cataract surgery, is currently contraindicated for patients who have had previous corneal or intraocular surgeries, the release said. In the trial, patients’ existing IOLs will be replaced with the miniature telescope to study its safety and effectiveness.

The study will be conducted at selected U.S. CentraSight providers, which are currently seeking patients to participate.
