Jonathan H. Lass, MD, the Charles I Thomas Professor of Ophthalmology at Case Western Reserve University, has been awarded the Castroviejo Medal, the Cornea Society’s highest honor, according to a press release.

Lass, a member of the Center for Anterior Segment Diseases and Surgery in the University Hospitals Eye Institute, medical director of Eversight Ohio and medical director of the Cornea Image Analysis Reading Center at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals, is a leading cornea and external disease expert.

His research has focused on corneal genetics, image analysis and understanding the factors that affect success in corneal preservation and transplantation. He is the study chair for the Cornea Preservation Time Study, which is examining donor cornea preservation time, graft success and cells loss in endothelial keratoplasty.

“Dr. Lass has standardized the way we review specular microscopy through the development of the Cornea Image Analysis Reading Center and as a result improved our evaluation of corneal endothelial cells,” Cornea Society President Marian S. Macsai, MD, said in the release.
