Implantation of a transitional toric monofocal IOL improved vision and offered rotational stability in eyes with cataract and corneal astigmatism, a study performed in Portugal found.

The prospective case series included 51 eyes of 39 patients with 1 D to 4.5 D of regular keratometric astigmatism who underwent phacoemulsification and received a Precizon toric model 565 IOL (Ophtec).

“The IOL’s material and offset-shaped haptics are designed to improve adherence to the posterior capsule, preventing rotation and posterior capsule opacification,” the study authors said. “The optic surface has a new transitional conic design in which the dioptric power is calculated individually as a spherical aberration-free dioptric power.”

Uncorrected and corrected logMAR distance visual acuities, spherical equivalent refraction, astigmatism, rotational stability and higher-order aberrations were evaluated over a 4-month follow-up period.

Uncorrected distance visual acuity was 0.3 or better (20/40 or better Snellen equivalent) in 50 eyes (98%) and 0.1 or better (20/25 or better) in 42 eyes (82%). Spherical equivalent was within 0.5 D of the target in 44 eyes (86%) and within 1 D in 50 eyes (98%). Refractive astigmatism was within 0.5 D of targeted correction in 30 eyes (59%) and within 1 D in 100% of eyes.

Aberrations were within normal parameters. Axis rotation was stable between 1 day and 4 months after surgery. – by Matt Hasson
