COPENHAGEN — The European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons has established a fellowship in honor of Peter Barry, FRCS, who died May 26. Barry was a member of the ESCRS since its inception and served in a variety of roles over the years, including director.

In the “Welcome from the President” address, kicking off the 34th congress of the society here, David Spalton, FRCS, FRCP, FRCOphth, said the ESCRS has established a bursary of 50,000 to be awarded to a trainee ophthalmologist to study for a year at a center of excellence anywhere in the world. The society intends to make its first award of the Peter Barry ESCRS Fellowship at the 35th congress.

“Peter was dedicated to training and education of the young ophthalmologist, and the board has decided that it would be a fitting memorial to him to commemorate him with an annual fellowship,” Spalton said.

ESCRS is a charitable organization whose objectives are education, training and research. “Training is also at the heart of our work,” Spalton said. “We have free membership for trainees, the Young Ophthalmologists program, we give bursaries to attend our annual meetings, and we have an observatory program and an exchange program with the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, too.” – by Patricia Nale, ELS
