The APAO Leadership Development Program held its annual mid-year master class in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from Sept. 2 to 4. This year’s topics included teamwork, advocacy, effective communication and management, with the Olympic Games as a fun theme throughout all the activities.

In addition to attending professional development workshops, participants enjoyed a concert by the Mongolian National Song and Dance Ensemble as well as a day trip to Terelj National Park, which included opportunities for horse riding and hiking through the beautiful mountain scenery.

Participants in the LDP are chosen by the APAO LDP Selection Committee based on nominations from APAO’s member societies. Nominees should be qualified eye doctors with leadership potential who are highly proficient in English and preferably younger than 50 years of age. Interested candidates can contact their member society to nominate them for the 2017-2018 class, which will be inducted at the 32nd APAO Congress in Singapore.

All LDP participants must plan and execute a self-initiated project. After presenting their projects at the 32nd APAO Congress, members of the 2016-2017 class will complete the program and be recognized in a graduation ceremony.

AAO-APAO joint meeting in Chicago

APAO is proud to co-sponsor the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s annual meeting, which will be held at McCormick Place in Chicago from Oct. 15 to 18.

The scientific program includes three joint AAO-APAO symposia, one each for the subspecialties of cornea, glaucoma and retina. APAO’s subspecialty member societies, including the Asia Cornea Society, Asia-Pacific Glaucoma Society, Asia-Pacific Society of Ocular Oncology and Pathology, Asia-Pacific Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Asia-Pacific Strabismus and Paediatric Ophthalmology Society and Asia-Pacific Vitreo-retina Society, will also present 12 hours of instruction courses.

Additionally, APAO has partnered with AAO and the International Council of Ophthalmology to present the Conference for Ophthalmic Educators on Saturday, Oct. 15. Prof. Rajvardhan Azad, chair of the APAO Ophthalmic Education Standing Committee, represents APAO on the conference steering committee.

Upcoming APAO Events

The 32nd APAO Congress

The 32nd APAO Congress will be held from March 1 to 5, 2017, at Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre in Singapore.

Hotel reservation for Scientific Program Committee members and officials is now open. All paid delegates can reserve rooms starting Nov. 1. Please contact the APAO Secretariat Office at accommodation@apaophth.org for group bookings of five or more.

Abstract submission for APAO 2017 is now closed. Authors will be notified of the abstract selection results no later than Nov. 30.

6th Asia-Pacific Eye Care Week

The 6th Asia-Pacific Eye Care Week will be held in the second week of October, from Oct. 10 to 16, in conjunction with World Sight Day 2016 on Oct. 13.

This year’s themes are “Cornea Infections in Asia” and “Diabetic Macular Edema.” Two of APAO’s subspecialty member societies, the Asia Cornea Society and Asia-Pacific Vitreo-retina Society, have produced a comprehensive set of educational materials and media kit, available on the APAO website at http://www.apaophth.org/sixth-asia-pacific-eye-care-week/. Member societies are invited to use these materials for public educational purposes during the 6th Asia-Pacific Eye Care Week. Where appropriate, the educational materials and media kit can be translated into the local language for more effective communication.

After the 6th Asia-Pacific Eye Care Week, APAO encourages all member societies to share photos and highlights of the activities held in their region via email to sydneystonner@apaophth.org. Details of the different member society events will then be posted to the APAO website and published in OSN APAO Edition.
