Alcon, in collaboration with TrueVision 3D Surgical, announced the launch of a new microscope-free digitally assisted vitreoretinal surgery platform that utilizes a 3-D screen for retinal surgeons.
The NGENUITY 3D Visualization System includes a high dynamic range camera and aims to improve posture and reduce fatigue for surgeons, according to an Alcon press release. The system eliminates the need for surgeons to look through a microscope during retinal surgeries, which can last between 30 minutes and 3 hours.
The platform will allow surgeons to increase magnification and use digital filters during procedures, which will highlight ocular structures and tissue layers. It also uses lower light levels, designed to minimize light exposure to a patient’s eye during surgery.
“The NGENUITY 3D Visualization System takes vitreoretinal surgery to a more intuitive operating experience, offering greater depth and detail during surgery,” Mike Ball, CEO of Alcon, said in the release. “Our goal is to provide surgeons with better visualization while operating on the back of the eye, facilitate teaching and ultimately improve patient outcomes.”
In the United States and some European countries, the system is expected to be available by Sept. 15, while availability in Japan is expected to begin in December, according to the release. Alcon expects to release the platform in other countries throughout 2017.
