FAIRFAX, Va. — Kensaku Miyake, MD, will deliver the Charles D. Kelman Innovators Lecture at next year’s meeting of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

ASCRS announced the selection of Dr. Miyake in a press release, noting that the lecture “honors an individual whose innovative ideas have benefited ophthalmologists and their patients.”

In his lecture, Dr. Miyake will discuss the application of a newly developed, highly sensitive camera and three-dimensional high-definition television system in ophthalmic surgery, the ASCRS press release said.

The combination of devices “not only allows surgeries to be performed and lower intensities of operating light to be used, but also provides real-time highly sensitive 3-D images identical to those observed by the surgeon,” the ASCRS release said.

Dr. Miyake is the chief medical editor of Ocular Surgery News Japan Edition and is a founding editor of Ocular Surgery News Europe/Asia-Pacific Edition. He has presented more than 10 named lectures and counts among his awards the Japanese Medical Association’s Supreme Award of Merit.

IRVINE, Calif. — Intralase Corp. announced that Gregory Anderson has been hired as the vice president, U.S. sales. Anderson will be the first individual to assume this newly created position, which is responsible for all sales activities for the U.S. region.

The position was created to maximize U.S. sales opportunities and Intralase’s share of the corneal flap market, said P. Bernard Haffey, executive vice president and chief commercial officer.

Anderson previously served at WaveLight Technologies AG, as vice president, sales and marketing. He was also employed by Lumenis Inc./Coherent Medical, for 16 years prior to that.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Bausch & Lomb announced that their vice president of research, Joseph C. Salamone, PhD, received the Sesquicentennial Medal of Polytechnic University, during a convocation for the University’s 150th anniversary and the inauguration of the 10th president.

Dr. Salamone received this award to honor his lifetime scientific achievements, including 165 technical papers and 115 patents in biomaterials (which are mainly devoted to ophthalmology and skin care).

In this new position, he will coordinate the company’s domestic and international sales, the design staff, as well as plans for corporate expansion. Muehlberger has been employed with Fashion Optical Displays since 1980.

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. — Genaera Corporation announced that their chief operating officer Roy C. Levitt, MD, has resigned and John L. Armstrong Jr., the president and chief operating officer will succeed as Genaera’s interim chief executive officer.

Mr. Armstrong, who joined the company in 2003, has previously served as the CEO of Mills Biopharmaceuticals, and vice president of business development at UroCor.

Dr. Levitt will complete his term on Genaera’s board of directors and continue as a consultant to the company. He served as CEO for 5 years, and has been with Genaera overall for 10 years.

WOBURN, Mass. — Anika Therapeutics Inc. announced the appointment of Peter Litman, JD, as their new vice president of business development.

Litman, who was previously the vice president of corporate development for the endoscopy division of Smith & Nephew, brings more than three decades of legal and development experience in the medical device sector.

TORONTO — OccuLogix Inc. announced that Steve Parks has been appointed to the company’s position of vice president of sales.

Mr. Parks joined OccuLogix from his position as the vice president of sales at Advanced Medical Optics Inc. He was also previously employed by Alcon Surgical, CooperVision Surgical Systems, Johnson & Johnson and Procter & Gamble Co.

Mr. Parks is succeeding Joseph Zawaideh, who will remain with the company in the capacity of sales and development.

LINCOLN, R.I., and PARIS, France — Neurotech, a biotechnology company specializing in retinal disease therapeutics announced that has appointed Ted Danse as its new president and chief executive officer. He brings to the position or 20 years of experience in the ophthalmic industry.

Danse previously served as president and CEO of Ista Pharmaceuticals Inc., as well as a director on the boards of both Quest Vision Technologies Inc. and Vision Solutions Technologies Inc.

DALLAS, TX — The American College of Eye Surgeons (ACES) announced that it has named Jeffrey Whitman, MD, as the president-elect of ACES. Dr. Whitman, medical director and chief surgeon of the Key-Whitman Eye Center, will fill this position for a term of two years.

Dr. Whitman participates in a variety of professional organizations, either as a member or by serving on the board, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the International Society of Refractive Surgery.
