NEW ORLEANS — With a year of experience using the Zeiss Cataract Suite markerless system, David F. Chang, MD, said he now finds the traditional manual marking method for aligning toric IOLs to be “crude.”

Chang related his experience using the system at a media briefing hosted by Carl Zeiss Meditec at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting here.

According to the briefing, recent clinical studies show that refractive outcomes are within ±0.5 D of refractive cylinder postoperatively in 99% of patients when the system is used.

Starting at the IOLMaster 500 or 700, a reference image aligned with limbal vasculature is obtained in every case along with other biometry data, then the image is stored in the Zeiss FORUM data management system. The Callisto eye connects devices and creates overlays for the surgical microscope, which is the OPMI Lumera, where data are injected into the eyepiece.

Because the software is referenced to align with the limbal vasculature, the 180° reference line overlay is automatically adjusted with eye movement.

“When the eye moves, you never lose [the alignment],” Chang said.
