Progressive IOL for mini incision shows good preliminary study results

MILAN — A new progressive IOL for a mini incision provides optimal vision at all distances, with no halos and a minimal amount of glare, according to the preliminary results of a study.
The Mini Well IOL (Sifi) is a four-point fixation lens made of a hydrophilic material, preloaded in an injector and easy to implant through a mini incision. It is an new optical concept, based on the induction of wavefront aberrations of opposite sign in the central pupil section.

“The progressive optic results from two concentric central zones with spherical aberrations of opposite sign and an external monofocal zone,” Gerd Auffarth, MD, PhD, said at the OSN Italy meeting. “The results on my first patient 1 year ago were fantastic and gave me a good reason to continue. She was a difficult mature cataract case in which we could not use the IOLMaster (Zeiss) and achieved binocular 20/15 at distance and near and 20/30 at intermediate.”
Auffarth presented the preliminary results of 19 eyes of 12 patients with 2 to 3 months of follow-up. All eyes achieved 20/25 at distance and near and 20/20 at intermediate.
“These results, at the beginning of the learning curve with this lens, are excellent,” Auffarth said.
Reading speed at the preferred reading distance was 90 words per minute at near and 122 words per minute at intermediate.
Halo and glare were measured using a simulator. No halos and a slight amount of glare were reported by the patients, who were all highly satisfied, Auffarth said.
A longer follow-up and more patients are needed to confirm these positive outcomes. – by Michela Cimberle
