NEW ORLEANS — A small-aperture IOL improved near and intermediate vision with high patient satisfaction, a speaker told colleagues here.

John Vukich, MD, presented 6-month follow-up data from a multicenter, post-market study conducted in Europe on the AcuFocus IC-8 small-aperture IOL. The IOL received CE Mark approval in the European Union in September 2014.

The study included 115 patients who underwent contralateral implantation of the IC-8 in one eye and an aspheric monofocal IOL in the fellow eye; 6-month data were available for 90 patients.

Results showed that mean Snellen-equivalent monocular uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) with the IC-8 IOL was 20/25 for distance, 20/25 for intermediate and 20/32 for near.

Mean binocular UCVA was 20/16 for near, 20/20 for intermediate and 20/32 for near.

Binocular summation improved distance and intermediate VA an average of one line, Vukich said.

Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) was 20/20 or better in 50% of IC-8 eyes, 62% in monofocal IOL eyes and 88% binocularly.

Mean UDVA was 20/25 in IC-8 eyes, 20/20 in monofocal eyes and 20/16 binocularly.

Uncorrected intermediate visual acuity was 20/25 in IC-8 eyes, 20/40 in monofocal eyes and 20/20 binocularly.

Uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) was 20/32 in IC-8 eyes, 20/63 in monofocal eyes and 20/32 binocularly.

Data showed that 97% of patients would undergo the procedure again; 6% of patients had spontaneous reports of dysphotopsia, Vukich said.

The IC-8 also compensated for uncorrected astigmatism, Vukich said.

“This is insensitive to cylinder. A pinhole will negate up to a diopter and a half of cylinder,” he said.

Vukich noted that the IC-8 IOL is particularly suited for eyes with irregular corneas. – by Matt Hasson and Patricia Nale, ELS
