Abbott reports $4.9 billion in worldwide sales in first quarter

Abbott reported $4.9 billion in worldwide sales in the first quarter, a 5.1% increase on an operational basis and a 0.2% decrease on a reported basis compared with the previous year, according to a press release.
U.S. sales increased 1.9%, partly because of a 7.5% increase in Medical Optics, while international sales increased 6.6% on an operational basis and decreased 1.2% on a reported basis.
The company reported a 5.4% increase in worldwide sales in Medical Optics on an operational bases and a 3.2% increase on a reported basis.
The increase in operational sales was attributed to continued market uptake of cataract products in the premium IOL segment, which includes Tecnis Symfony and Tecnis toric lenses, the release said.
