WARSAW, Poland — A new aberration-optimized SupraCor algorithm leads to good results in hyperopic patients, according to one surgeon.

A prospective study of 46 patients with refraction between +0.5 D and +4 D and astigmatism up to 3 D was presented at the winter meeting of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. A near addition of +2 D or more was needed. Patients underwent LASIK with the Femto LDV Crystal line (Ziemer) for flap creation.

“In the hyperopic patient, you initially perform the correction for far, and in the 3-mm central zone, you then perform the addition for near,” Bojan Pajic, MD, said.

The new SupraCor nomogram of the Technolas excimer laser (Bausch + Lomb Technolas) is used to perform an aberration-optimized procedure with reduction of spherical aberration for improved quality of vision.

The mean age of the study patients was 54 years old. Refraction improved from mean +2 D preop to 0.5 D postop.

“You should explain to your patients that they will experience fluctuations during the first week. After that, refraction remains stable,” Pajic said.

A slight loss of uncorrected distance visual acuity may occur at 1 week, but at 6 months all patients in the study group were 20/20 or better.

“It is a very impressive procedure. Minutes after surgery, patients could read without glasses,” Pajic said
