VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Orbis International, sometimes better known as the Flying Eye Hospital, was lauded as a Champion for Vision at the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus meeting here.
The Orbis organization first invited a pediatric ophthalmologist to join its flight team 30 years ago and has since established or strengthened more than 50 pediatric eye care centers across the globe, AAPOS President M. Edward Wilson, MD, told colleagues at the award presentation.

“What’s most important to recognize about Orbis is the organization’s dedication and commitment to children’s eye health,” Wilson said.
Danielle Bogert, director of global faculty relations and clinical services for Orbis International, accepted the award.
“An organization that began as a plane now operates long-term programs in 18 countries across Asia, Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa. Orbis is probably best known for its unique education and training tools, the Flying Eye Hospital, Cybersight and also the largest global cadre of over 400 volunteer professionals,” Wilson said.
The award is given jointly by the Children’s Eye Foundation and AAPOS to celebrate extraordinary efforts to champion children’s vision. – by Patricia Nale, ELS
