The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has approved the iStent trabecular micro-bypass stent for use in conjunction with cataract surgery to lower IOP in patients with mild to moderate open-angle glaucoma, according to a press release from Glaukos.
“We appreciate the efforts of the MHLW to evaluate and approve the iStent, and we are eager to introduce this breakthrough MIGS technology to Japanese surgeons and patients,” Thomas Burns, president and CEO of Glaukos, said in the release.
The company has established a direct commercial team and has formed a wholly owned subsidiary in Japan. Glaukos plans to launch the iStent in Japan once the iStent procedure is approved for reimbursement by the MHLW.
