Victor T. Curtin, MD, long-time professor at Bascom Palmer, dies

Victor T. Curtin, MD, professor emeritus of ophthalmology at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, died March 9 in Miami.
Curtin was the first faculty member recruited for Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami School of Medicine, where he served for 57 years.

Curtin graduated from Harvard College and was stationed in Japan with the U.S. Army Medical Corps. After his service, he received dental and medical degrees from Harvard Medical School, interned at San Francisco County Hospital and completed an ophthalmology residency at Cornell University Medical College.
Curtin completed a fellowship in ocular pathology and retinal disease at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and a fellowship in ophthalmic pathology at the National Institutes of Health and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.
In 1962, Curtin established the Florida Lions Eye Bank and Ocular Pathology Laboratory at Bascom Palmer in partnership with the Lions Clubs of South Florida. From 1959 to 1996, he was the director of Bascom Palmer’s residency program and chairman of the resident and fellow selection committee.
In 1986, the University of Miami School of Medicine established the Victor T. Curtin Chair in Ophthalmology, which supports research in experimental ocular pathology.
Curtin is survived by his wife, Mary Lou, and four children.
