New-concept accommodating IOLs might overcome limitations of previous models

LISBON, Portugal — New-concept accommodating IOLs may overcome the limitations of existing models, providing a true alternative to multifocality in restoring all-distance vision, according to one speaker.
“Accomodative IOLs, the holy grail of modern implantology, have not met the expectations so far, but research is ongoing. Once we achieve this goal, multifocal IOLs will not be able to compete, as it happened with pseudophakic glasses and IOLs,” Jorge L. Alió, MD, PhD, said at the Controversies in Ophthalmology meeting.

He presented to the audience four new-concept lenses. The FluidVision (PowerVision) is an acrylic lens with hollow optic and haptics that mimics natural accommodation with shape changes produced by silicone oil squeezed from the haptics to the optic. The Sapphire AutoFocal IOL (Elenza) has incorporated microsensors that detect the physiological trigger of accommodation and connect to an electroactive switchable element that automatically adjusts focusing power. The Dynacurve (NuLens) is a sulcus-fixated lens in which accommodation is obtained by pushing a flexible optic membrane through a rigid hole, mimicking what happens in nature in the eyes of diving water birds.
The most promising new technology, according to Alió, is the Lumina (Akkolens), in which two optical surfaces shift perpendicular to the optical axis due to vectorial forces generated by the ciliary body during the accommodation process.
“The magnification and power of the lens change, allowing the patient to focus at different distances,” he said.
Alió has personally implanted 72 eyes with this lens. A range of accommodation between 1.5 D and 6 D was obtained.
