Nanophthalmic eyes show some significant improvements with high-powered IOL

Implantation of a foldable high-powered IOL significantly improved uncorrected distance visual acuity and spherical equivalent in nanophthalmic eyes, according to a study.
The retrospective case series consisted of 21 eyes of 13 patients with nanophthalmos who underwent cataract extraction and posterior chamber IOL implantation.
Patients received a CT Xtreme D IOL (Carl Zeiss Meditec), a customizable single-piece foldable monofocal aspheric IOL with refractive power ranging from +45 D to +60 D. The lens is injected through a 2.2-mm incision.
The primary outcome measure was change in spherical equivalence, and secondary outcomes were changes in logMAR uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity. Mean follow-up was 9.6 months.
Spherical equivalence improved significantly, from a mean of +16.11 D preoperatively to +2 D postoperatively (P < .0001).
Uncorrected distance visual acuity improved significantly, from a mean of 1.47 logMAR before surgery to 0.74 logMAR after surgery (P = .016). The improvement in corrected distance visual acuity was not significant. IOP did not change significantly.
Serious postoperative complications were reported in five eyes (23.8%). Two eyes had malignant glaucoma, two eyes had vitreous hemorrhage, and one eye had vitreous hemorrhage with retinal detachment, leading to no light perception. – by Matt Hasson
