Surgeon shares lessons from 20 years of phakic IOL experience
CHENNAI, India — While most phakic IOLs have excellent visual outcomes in the near term, long-term results are the key to successful phakic IOL implantation, according to a surgeon here who shared his 20-year experience.
M. Alaa El-Danasoury, MD, shared lessons he has learned after 20 years of performing phakic IOL implantations in a presentation at the Indian Intraocular Implant and Refractive Surgery meeting.
El-Danasoury said that while all phakic IOLs are excellent at achieving predictable myopic correction, having a toric option is still necessary in more than 50% of patients.
He also noted that a large optical zone is important for providing quality of vision. Another necessary requirement of quality phakic IOLs is stability.
“A moving object in the anterior chamber is not welcome,” El-Danasoury said.
Lenses should be biocompatible enough for the long term, while another key lesson he has learned is that the lenses should be easy to remove or replace.
