Second Sight Medical Products announced an exclusive agreement with Tecnosalud for the company to distribute its Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System in Argentina, according to a press release.

Tecnosalud will be responsible for in-county sales, marketing, national reimbursement and surgical and technical support of the product. This distribution agreement is part of Second Sight’s plans to expand into South America.

The Argus II system is designed to aid blind individuals with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). An estimated 10,000 individuals in Argentina are blind due to RP, with an additional 200 diagnoses each year, according to the release.

“Fourteen years ago, Tecnosalud took a cutting edge technology in Argentina, the cochlear implant, and became the number one distributor for Cochlear Ltd. in South America,” Will McGuire, president and chief executive officer of Second Sight, said in the release. “Their experience in bringing new high-value medical technologies to the market includes expertise in navigating the national health system, which covers the cost of care for those with disabilities. We believe this makes Tecnosalud the ideal distributor in Argentina and that they can be successful with the Argus II.” – by Talitha Bennett
