Positive early results of extended-range IOL reported
LONDON — Early positive experience with the Tecnis Symfony IOL, which received CE mark in Europe earlier this year, was related in a press briefing hosted by Abbott Medical Optics here.
“Patients demand high-quality vision for a longer time, and they also demand vision that is spectacle-independent, which is crisp, clear and has no side effects,” Gerd U. Auffarth, MD, PhD, said during the briefing at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons Congress.

Auffarth reported 1-month results from a 3-month, open-label, prospective, bilateral, multicenter study of outcomes in 82 patients implanted with the Symfony extended-range-of-vision IOL.
Ninety percent achieved 20/20 vision for far and intermediate distance acuities, and almost 90% achieved 20/40 or better for near visual acuity, according to Auffarth.
The 1-month data demonstrate extended range of vision with excellent uncorrected visual acuity for far and intermediate, and functional near vision, Auffarth said.
Additionally, there is a low incidence of optical symptoms, a high degree of patient satisfaction and spectacle independence, and no unexpected medical findings or device-related adverse effects, according to Auffarth.
Disclosure: Auffarth has received research grants from several IOL companies.
