WAIKOLOA, Hawaii — When David F. Chang, MD, introduced his Refractive/Cataract section co-moderator, Roger F. Steinert, MD, he reminded the Hawaiian Eye audience of Steinert’s invaluable contribution to the annual meeting here.

Before Steinert’s presentation “The Heat is On: Next Generation Presbyopia Implants,” Chang noted that Steinert is one of the founders of the Hawaiian Eye.

“What we have now today as Hawaiian Eye, we very much owe to Roger Steinert,” Chang said. “Roger had to miss his very first Hawaiian Eye meeting last year as he was battling courageously a very severe health issue. And it has been long odyssey to get back here to join us in Hawaii.”

The audience responded enthusiastically, giving Steinert a long standing ovation.

“Thank you very, very much. My time is now up,” Steinert quipped about his timed 8-minute talk.

At the conclusion of Steinert’s talk, Chang said, “The hardest thing I ever did was present in a foreign language, but Roger’s battle with apraxia is much more difficult.”

“My German is much better,” Steinert joked.

Later, friend and colleague, Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, said, “it was great to see Roger Steinert back at Hawaiian Eye, and it was fitting for him to receive such a warm welcome when he was back on the podium. Roger has been a part of Hawaiian Eye for the past 25 years and he has been a friend for 40 years, so it was especially important for me to see him back here after his recent health struggles.”

“For the past 25 years, Roger and I have worked on producing an ophthalmology educational meeting in Hawaii. From the beginning, Roger has been the heart and soul of this undertaking. It was wonderful to welcome him back after a one year hiatus,” said Carmen A. Puliafito, MD, Hawaiian Eye/Retina program planning committee chair. – by Joan-Marie Stiglich, ELS
