Vision recovers quickly after removal of small aperture corneal inlay

ORLANDO, Fla. — The rate for visual recovery after removal of a small aperture corneal inlay is quick, according to a study here at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology meeting.
“The important thing about the inlay is that we want to show the primary advantages. If the patient is not happy, we can remove it. After removal, recovery is quick and the patient’s vision comes back to what their vision was before the inlay was put into the eye,” Srividhya H. Vilupuru, OD, PhD, told Ocular Surgery News.
The retrospective study included 63 patients who received the Kamra inlay (AcuFocus) and volunteered to have the inlay removed because the patient was unsatisfied with vision results, had dry eye or could not neuroadapt.
“If removal is needed, results of this analysis demonstrate that uncorrected distance, uncorrected near and best corrected distance vision recovers by 1 month and remains stable thereafter,” Vilupuru and colleague said in a poster at the meeting.
Mean time for removal of the inlay after implantation was 11.3 months. Patients were monitored until 6 months after surgery.
Mean uncorrected distance visual acuity was 0.13 logMAR before inlay removal and 0.08 logMAR 6 months after inlay removal; mean uncorrected near visual acuity was 0.33 logMAR before inlay removal and 0.41 logMAR 6 months after inlay removal.
Fifty-nine patients had best corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA) of 20/25 or better, and all patients had a BCDVA of 20/32 or better.
Whereas BCDVA was significantly different at 1 week and 1 month after inlay removal compared with BCDVA before inlay removal, the BCDVA difference between 3 months and 6 months was not significant.
