Novel high near add multifocal IOL well tolerated, effective in AMD patients
TOKYO — A novel IOL model with high near addition provides low vision patients with good distance vision and the ability to read with reduced or no need for special devices, according to one surgeon.
The Lentis Mplus High Add IOL (Oculentis) is a hydrophobic acrylic biconvex IOL with a +8 D sector-shaped near addition resulting in 6 D of near correction at the spectacle plane and 1.5 times magnifying power.
“It provides image magnification for near — quite useful for AMD patients who normally have to rely on low vision reading aids such as magnifying glasses or electronic reading desks,” Gerd Auffarth, MD, PhD, said at the World Ophthalmology Congress.

Auffarth has implanted this new lens in three cases with success. Multifocal lenses normally pose significant neuroadaptation problems, but this model is well tolerated by patients with age-related macular degeneration. A few days are required to get used to reading through the near segment of the IOL, but no special training is required. The patients implanted so far did not report any visual disturbances and are highly satisfied, he said.
“AMD patients are a huge group. This IOL is a useful and easy solution compared to telescopic and prismatic lenses. Patients should be selected among those who have dry or wet AMD stabilized by injection therapy and VA of at least 20/200,” he said.
The lens should be implanted in the eye with lower vision, while a lower 1.5 D add IOL is implanted in the better eye. Visualization of the retina by optical coherence tomography is not hindered by the lens.
