Aspheric-customized LASIK and wavefront-optimized LASIK yielded similar visual outcomes and safety, according to a study.
The retrospective study included 40 eyes of 24 patients who underwent LASIK to correct moderate hyperopia. Twenty-four eyes underwent wavefront-optimized LASIK, and 16 eyes underwent aspheric-customized LASIK.
All procedures were performed with the WaveLight Allegretto 400 Hz excimer laser (Alcon).
Six months after surgery, mean postoperative spherical aberration for a 6-mm pupil was –0.39 µm in the wavefront-optimized group and 0.04 µm in the aspheric-customized group. The Q-factor was –0.52 µm in the wavefront-optimized group and –0.04 µm in the aspheric-customized group. Both between-group differences were statistically significant (P .05).
All other differences between the groups were not statistically significant.
Uncorrected distance visual acuity was 20/18.69 in the wavefront-optimized group and 20/20 in the aspheric-customized group. The mean efficacy index was 20/23.53 in the wavefront-optimized group and 20/20.83 in the aspheric-customized group.
Safety profiles were similar in both groups. – by Matt Hasson
