WAIKOLOA, Hawaii — Peels in combination with other procedures, such as after injectables or intense pulsed laser or as an add-on service to facials, are considered safe, easy and inexpensive, according to a dermatologist here.
“[Peels] are tried and true. They are safe, easy to perform, inexpensive, people like them and so they have really stood the test of time,” Joely Kaufman, MD, said in the Oculoplastics Symposium: Principles of Aesthetic Oculoplastics at Hawaiian Eye. “Basically they cause a chemical ablation of defined layers of the skin and you can remove whatever layers you like depending on what chemical ingredient you choose.”

Combining peels with other procedures are easy to perform or can be delegated and provide consistent results, she said.
“You can combine peels with toxins and fillers. Typically, I put the peel on after we [inject] Botox and filler or even with intense pulsed light or as an add-on service if you are providing facials. They are safe, easy to delegate if you do not want to do them yourself. If you want to perform them, there are peels that are only physician peels,” Kaufman said as a way of differentiating one’s practice from a medical spa.
The types of peels are trichloracetic acid, alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids, combination, retinoid and phenol. The top uses for peels in a laser practice are for pigmentation, photo damage, acne and acne scarring and irregular texture. – by Nhu Te
