LAS VEGAS — New World Medical has launched the Kahook Dual Blade for excising trabecular meshwork.

In a company sponsored media briefing here at the American Academy of Ophthalmology annual meeting, the Kahook Dual Blade was showcased as a single-use, disposable ophthalmic knife intended for removing trabecular meshwork through a small clear corneal incision.

The device features a thin neck, an indicator for blade orientation, parallel dual blades, a pointed tip to pierce the tissue, and a heel with rounded edges to prevent damage to the outer wall of Schlemm’s canal.

In a preliminary survey of 11 surgeons, 97% agreed or strongly agreed that the use of the Kahook Dual Blade was straightforward, entry into the canal with the device was uncomplicated, and advancement of the blade along the canal was easy.

Additionally, treatment was successfully completed in all patients, there were no major complications, IOP results were in the low teens, and there was a reduction in glaucoma medications, according to the presentation.

The device is FDA-registered and will be commercially available in the U.S. on November 16, a company release said. — by Kristie L. Kahl
