Low-power toric IOL reduces low levels of astigmatism

A low-power multifocal toric IOL benefited patients with low degrees of astigmatism, according to a study.

The retrospective study included 76 eyes of 63 cataract patients who received an SN6AT2 AcrySof IQ monofocal toric IOL (Alcon) and 44 eyes of 44 patients who received an SND1T2 AcrySof IQ ReSTOR multifocal toric IOL +3.0 D (Alcon).

At 3 months after surgery, refractive cylinder was less than 0.25 D in 69.7% of patients in the monofocal group and 70.5% of patients in the multifocal group. Refractive cylinder was significantly reduced in both groups (P = .001).

Postoperative spherical equivalent refraction was within 0.5 D of the target in 93.3% of patients in the multifocal group. Refractive cylinder was within 0.5 D of the target in 88.7% of patients. The values were 77.9% and 94.7%, respectively, in the monofocal group. Refractive cylinder was significantly reduced in both groups (P = .001).

Uncorrected distance visual acuity was 20/20 or better in 60.3% of patients in the monofocal group and 68.2% of patients in the multifocal group. – by Matt Hasson
