Abbott reports $5.2 billion in third-quarter worldwide sales

Abbott reported $5.2 billion in worldwide sales in the third quarter, a 10.9% increase on an operational basis and a 1.4% increase on a reported basis from the previous year, according to a press release.

Net earnings increased 7.6% from the same quarter a year ago, from $538 million to $580 million. Diluted earnings per common share increased 5.6%, from $0.36 to $0.38.

Medical Optics worldwide sales were $283 million, an increase of 3% on an operational basis and a decrease of 5.3% on a reported basis in the third quarter, which included an unfavorable 8.3% effect of foreign exchange. Cataract product sales represented 70% of Medical Optics sales, with an increase in the high single digits.
