BARCELONA — A fluid-filled IOL provides true accommodation up to 4 D, stable over 24 months of follow-up, according to one surgeon.

The FluidVision IOL (PowerVision), a three-dimensional device with a large leading haptic, restores true accommodation through a physiological system.

“Tiny natural muscular forces in the eye move fluids inside the lens, producing shape changes,” Frik J. Potgieter, MD, said at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting.

A clinical study with the IOL was performed in Pretoria, South Africa, to evaluate accommodation, long-term vision outcome, stability and visual quality.

“We implanted the lens in one eye of 26 patients and checked them regularly over 24 months. Eight patients had a second implant in the fellow eye at 15 to 21 months,” Potgieter said.

Monocularly, patients gained approximately 3 D of accommodation, increasing to an average of 4 D with binocular summation effect. Defocus curves showed a continuum of vision from far to near. Mean best corrected visual acuity was 20/20 at distance, 20/25 at intermediate and 20/30 at near. Results were maintained throughout the follow-up.

“We compared the lens to other lenses in terms of quality of vision. Mesopic far and near vision contrast sensitivity and glare contrast sensitivity were equal to those of a monofocal lens, while multifocals had a significantly lower performance,” Potgieter said. by Michela Cimberle
