BARCELONA — Thierry Zeyen, MD, outlined the structure and statutes of the European Alliance for Vision Research and Ophthalmology – or EU EYE – at a launch meeting here.

EU EYE is a non-profit pan-European advocacy organization whose main objectives are to raise political and public awareness of ophthalmology and to increase funding for vision research, said Zeyen, who is president of the organization as well as a representative of the European Glaucoma Society.

Other major European ophthalmological groups represented include the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, European Eye Bank Association, European Paediatric Ophthalmology Society, European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, European Society of Cornea and Ocular Surface Disease Specialists, European Society of Retina Specialists (Euretina), European Association for Vision and Eye Research (EVER) and European Vision Institute.

“You can already have a look at the beginning of our website, who we are and what are our objectives,” Zeyen said.

“Blindness and vision impairment affect over 28 million people in Europe,” Zeyen said, identifying the main causes as cataract, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, which results in a heavy financial burden.

Launch meetings will also be held at the upcoming Euretina and EVER meetings. — by Patricia Nale, ELS
