FDA approves Alcon's AcrySof IQ aspheric IOL with UltraSert preloaded delivery system

Alcon received FDA approval for its AcrySof IQ aspheric IOL with the UltraSert preloaded delivery system for cataract surgery, according to a Novartis press release.

The delivery system combines a manually loaded device with a disposable preloaded injector.

It features the TensionGlide plunger for controlled delivery of the IOL into the capsular bag, a tip designed to support consistent IOL folding and placement, a smaller nozzle tip for a corneal incision down to 2.2 mm to insert the IOL, and a Depth Guard nozzle to prevent the device from being inserted deeper than necessary, the release said.

“We are addressing a distinct need of cataract surgeons for a single-use system that maximizes their control during surgery and helps them streamline procedures to enable improved patient outcomes,” Sergio Duplan, Alcon region president, U.S. and Canada, said in the release.

The UltraSert system received CE mark approval in June, the release said.
