Alcon reports single-digit growth in second quarter

Alcon reported $2.6 billion in net sales and an underlying growth of 2% in the second quarter of 2015, according to a Novartis press release.

“This was driven by lower sales in the U.S. and Asia, which resulted from a slowdown in our surgical equipment sales as well as softer IOL sales due to mix and pricing challenges despite strong continued unit growth, and an accelerated decline in our contact lens care solutions business,” Jeff George, Global Head of Alcon, said in a video presentation.

Core operating income declined 10% from the second quarter of the previous year to $796 million in the second quarter of 2015.

In the first half of 2015, surgical sales increased 2%, ophthalmic pharmaceuticals grew 3% and vision care increased 1%.

The company hopes to increase growth after the recent European CE mark approvals of the AcrySof IQ PanOptix trifocal IOL and the UltraSert preloaded IOL delivery system, George said.
