Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University Of Miami Miller School of Medicine has been ranked the nation’s best hospital in ophthalmology for the 12th consecutive year by U.S. News & World Report.
“Receiving the No. 1 ranking for 12 consecutive years recognizes the exceptional expertise of Bascom Palmer’s team. Together, Bascom Palmer’s world-class ophthalmologists, vision researchers, nurses, ophthalmic technicians and support staff have one goal — to provide the ultimate in compassion and medical care to patients,” Eduardo C. Alfonso, MD, professor and chairman of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, said in a press release from Bascom Palmer.
In the 26th edition of the Best Hospital rankings, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute was among 137 facilities, approximately 3% of the 4,716 analyzed, to be ranked in one or more of the 16 specialties: ophthalmology; cancer; neurology and neurosurgery; cardiology and heart surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; orthopedics; ear, nose and throat; pulmonology; gastroenterology and GI surgery; psychiatry; geriatrics; rehabilitation; gynecology; rheumatology; nephrology; and urology.
The Best Hospital rankings are designed to help patients identify hospitals that excel in treating life-threatening or rare conditions and include consumer data and information for almost 5,000 hospitals nationwide.
The ranking is derived from patient volume, risk-adjusted survival rates and adequacy of nurse staffing, among other care-related indicators. Because mortality is a key factor in the complex weighting system employed by U.S. News & World Report, ophthalmology, psychiatry, rehabilitation and rheumatology are judged using a reputation metric.
U.S. News & World Report expanded the number of physicians surveyed for the 2015-16 rankings, with RTI International producing the data.

1. Bascom Palmer Eye Institute–Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital, Miami
