The availability of the Argus II retinal prosthesis system has been expanded in Europe, with first commercial implantations being done in Austria, Turkey and Spain, according to a release from Second Sight Medical Products.

OSN Europe Edition Board Member Susanne Binder, MD, was the first surgeon to implant the prosthesis in Austria. She talked with Healio.com/OSN at the American Society of Retina Specialists meeting in Vienna about the implantation of the Argus II in the 54-year-old blind patient with retinitis pigmentosa.

The Argus II is now available in approved centers in Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the U.S., the release said.
