SAN DIEGO — A trifocal toric IOL may result in a high degree of spectacle independence and patient satisfaction, according to a presentation here.

At the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery annual meeting, Ekkehard Fabian, MD, presented the refractive results and intraoperative on-axis markerless alignment of the At Lisa trifocal toric 939 IOL (Carl Zeiss Meditec) in 33 cataract patients using an online image-processing system.

The minimum and maximum preoperative sphere was -7.5 D and +3.5 D, respectively, and the minimum and maximum cylinder was -0.75 D and +3.25 D, respectively. Postoperatively, astigmatism was reduced by an average 0.3 D.

At 6 months, mean best corrected visual acuity improved from 0.67 to 1.0, mean uncorrected distance visual acuity improved from 0.89 to 1.0, and mean uncorrected near visual acuity improved from 0.94 to 1.12.

In patient interviews at 12 months or later, there were few complaints about refractive results and a high degree of spectacle independence.

“The trifocal toric IOL has a very high degree of spectacle independence and patient satisfaction, and the cataract suite electronic systems make the workflow easier, more precise and safer,” Fabian said. - by Kristie L. Kahl
