Leica Microsystems intends to acquire Bioptigen Inc. “to strengthen its position in the ophthalmology market,” the company announced in a press release after a definitive agreement between the two was signed.

Leica develops and manufactures microscopes and scientific instruments; Bioptigen develops and manufactures OCT technology.

“Adding Bioptigen’s OCT capabilities to our surgical microscopes directly addresses our customers’ requirement for better decision making tools,” Heinrich Dreyer, vice president of Leica’s Medical Division, said in the release.
