There may be a significant association between dry eye disease and both anxiety and depression, according to a study.

The retrospective case-control study analyzed separate odds ratios for dry eye disease and anxiety and depression among a large population. Of the 460,611 patients included in the study, 7,207 had dry eye, 20,004 had anxiety and 30,100 had depression.

The adjusted odds ratio between dry eye disease and anxiety was 2.8, while the odds ratio between dry eye disease and depression was 2.9.

“Given the nature of the association in our study, we offer that primary care providers should also view dry eye disease among the same group of chronic medical illnesses with implications for psychiatric disease,” the study authors said. “This recognition likewise should have screening and referral implications for primary care providers as well.” - by Kristie L. Kahl
