AcrySof IQ ReSTOR improves visual acuity, reduces cylinder at 6 months

SAN DIEGO — Bilateral implantation of an apodized diffractive multifocal toric IOL yielded positive visual and refractive outcomes at 6 months, according to a poster presented here.
At the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting, Yonca A. Akova, MD, and colleagues reported on outcomes obtained with a series of AcrySof IQ ReSTOR +2.5 D toric multifocal IOLs (Alcon).
The study included 24 eyes of 12 patients who underwent cataract surgery and implantation of an AcrySof IQ ReSTOR SV25T2 (four eyes), SV25T3 (eight eyes), SV25T4 (six eyes) or SV25T5 (six eyes).
Inclusion criteria were age of 20 years to 75 years, need for bilateral cataract extraction and regular corneal astigmatism of 0.75 D to 2.5 D. Investigators evaluated spherical equivalent, refractive and corneal cylinder, visual acuity and IOL rotation at 6 months after surgery.
Patients were given subjective questionnaires preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively.
Mean spherical equivalent among all eyes was 0.12 D at 6 months. Mean refractive cylinder decreased from 1.55 D to 0.42 D.
Mean binocular uncorrected visual acuity was 0.94 at 4 m, J4 at 40 cm and J2 at 60 cm.
Mean IOL rotation was 0.83°.
The questionnaires showed that patients’ subjective experience with visual tasks at all distances improved from the preoperative visit to 6 months after surgery.
“Six months after implantation of the toric multifocal IOL, patients had significantly reduced SE and refractive cylinder, excellent visual acuity at far and intermediate distances and acceptable near visual acuity, and minimal IOL rotation,” the authors wrote. - by Matt Hasson
