Abbott receives FDA approval for iDesign Advanced Wavescan Studio system
The FDA approved the iDesign Advanced Wavescan Studio system for use in LASIK procedures, according to an Abbott news release.
The iDesign system uses wavefront diagnostic aberrometry to detect imperfections in the eye with high-definition scanning technology, and five optical measurements allow a surgeon to customize a patient’s LASIK treatment.
Patients who were previously not considered candidates for LASIK may be better screened with the technology, the release said.
The system uses the same technology that measures the mirrors in NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, the release said.
Abbott expects to launch the iDesign system in the U.S. in June.
