ISTANBUL — First results of the Tecnis Symfony extended range of vision IOL from Abbott Medical Optics show a high degree of spectacle independence with good vision at all distances and excellent visual quality, according to one speaker.
Ante Barišić
“This lens looks like a multifocal, but it is not. The unique proprietary echelette design creates only one elongated focus,” Ante Barišić, MD, said at the winter meeting of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.
The extended depth of focus allows the patient to see well at all distances. In addition, the achromatic technology corrects chromatic aberration and improves image quality.
“Our center, the Svjetlost eye institute of Zagreb, Croatia, was involved in the European multicenter study on this lens. We have implanted 88 Symfony and six Symfony toric from July 2014 to February 2015. The first 12 patients were included in the clinical study, and according to the study protocol, we targeted emmetropia in both eyes. Later, we tried micro-monovision in a group of patients, targeting emmetropia in the dominant eye and mild myopia up to 0.5 D in the non-dominant eye,” Barišić said.
With both methods, good distance and intermediate vision was obtained. In the monovision group, near vision of J1 to J2 was achieved, with a sacrifice of a fraction of a diopter for distance and intermediate. At 1 month, no patients wore spectacles.
Two patients spontaneously reported halos, and a few more reported halos when asked.
“Since this is not a multifocal lens, there is less halo, though still more than with monofocal IOLs,” Barišić said.
In Barišić’s opinion, this lens might have advantages for patients with macular diseases, which were excluded from multifocal lens use.
