Retaine ophthalmic emulsion may be an effective therapy to reduce signs and symptoms of dry eye, according to a study.
The single-center, open-label study evaluated 42 patients who received one to two drops of Retaine (Ocusoft) twice daily over approximately 2 weeks. Patients assessed drop comfort after each dosage with a symptomology diary. Ocular sign and symptom assessments, visual acuity procedures and comfort assessments were evaluated at the first visit on day 1 and before drop instillation at the second visit between day 13 and 17.
Before dosage at the second visit, corneal fluorescein staining was significantly lower in the superior region, central region, sum of all three cornea regions and all five ocular regions combined compared with baseline. For the corneal and conjunctival regions combined, the mean score decreased from 9.36 at the first office visit to 8.67 at the second.
Ocular symptoms decreased significantly from a baseline score of 8.71 to 6.67 at the second visit. In particular, discomfort, dryness and grittiness achieved statistical improvement.
There was no significant percent change in mean breakup area between the first visit and the second visit.
In a questionnaire, 45% of patients selected only positive words to characterize drop comfort while 2% selected only negative words. – by Kristie L. Kahl
