STAAR Surgical has appointed Caren Mason as president and CEO, according to a press release.

The appointment is effective immediately. Mason replaces Barry G. Caldwell, who retired March 1.

Mason joined STAAR’s board of directors in June 2014 and became chair of the Quality and Regulatory Committee in September 2014 . She previously served as CEO of Verinata Health, president and CEO of Quidel Corporation, and president and CEO of MiraMedica, the release said.

"After completing with our outside consultant an extensive and exhaustive search for the next leader of our company, we determined the ideal candidate was already a member of our team, and we are delighted that Caren has agreed to become our president and CEO," Mark Logan, chairman of the board of directors of STAAR, said in the release.

Mason also serves on the executive committee for the UCSD Moores Cancer Center board of visitors, is chair of the UCSD Moores Cancer Center Advisory and Innovation Council, and is a director of HealthTell.
