Custom sequence testing may accurately define glaucoma severity

CORONADO, Calif. — Custom sequence testing for relative afferent pupillary defect may objectively quantify disease severity compared with standard testing sequence, according to a presentation here.
In a poster presented at the American Glaucoma Society meeting, Alice Williams, MD, and colleagues examined 49 patients with glaucoma who underwent relative afferent pupillary defect testing with the Konan RAPDx pupillograph using standard and custom testing sequences. The prospective, cross-sectional study determined response amplitude asymmetry and response latency asymmetry.
Standard and custom testing sequences were similar in response amplitude asymmetry correlation to visual field mean deviation. Higher response amplitude asymmetry for the custom sequence was significantly correlated with greater asymmetry of mean deviation. There was no correlation with response latency asymmetry or duration of maximum constriction.
“Further research is needed to determine the most useful testing sequences and combinations of clinical and pupillary response parameters for detecting and staging glaucoma,” the study authors said. – by Kristie L. Kahl and Patricia Nale, ELS
