Zeiss's Surgical Ophthalmology unit grows fastest in first quarter

Carl Zeiss Meditec’s Surgical Ophthalmology unit led the company’s three strategic business units in first quarter growth rate, according to a company press release.

Overall, the company increased its revenue 13.6% to €241.1 million, with the Surgical Ophthalmology strategic business unit gaining a 22.4% increase to €81.6 million, up from €66.7 million in the same quarter last year.

The Microsurgery strategic business unit increased its revenue by 4.6% to €67.8 million, and the Ophthalmic Systems strategic business unit totaled €91.7 million for a 13.5% increase.

Earnings before interest and taxes totaled €27.9 million in the first quarter, despite an increase in costs for its strategic research project in ophthalmology.

Consolidated net income decreased 9.4% to €19.4 million, compared with €21.4 million in the first quarter of 2014.
