New phakic IOL model yields positive results 1 year postoperatively

Implantation of a new phakic IOL may be as safe, effective and predictable as previous IOL models to correct myopia, according to a study.

The prospective nonrandomized clinical study analyzed 121 eyes of 68 patients after implantation of the V4b model of the Visian Implantable Collamer phakic IOL (STAAR Surgical) over a 12-month follow-up period.

The mean spherical equivalent was –8.61 ± 3.41 D preoperatively and –0.18 ± 0.29 D at 1 year postoperatively. Eighty percent of eyes were within ±0.25 D of the attempted refraction, and 94% were within ±0.5 D.

Uncorrected distance visual acuity was 20/20 or better in 66.1% of eyes and 20/40 or better in 95% of eyes. Corrected distance visual acuity was 20/20 or better in 85.1% of eyes and 20/40 or better in all eyes at the 12-month follow-up. No eyes lost lines of corrected distance visual acuity, while 18% of eyes gained one or more lines.

No intraoperative complications occurred, and no IOLs needed to be repositioned or explanted after 1 year postoperatively. – by Kristie L. Kahl
