Eyes with TIF more likely to develop textural interface opacity after DSAEK

Eyes with transient interface fluid displayed on intraoperative optical coherence tomography are more likely to develop textural interface opacity after Descemet’s stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty, according to study findings.
Researchers analyzed 76 eyes of 69 patients who underwent DSAEK between October 2011 and September 2013 as part of the PIONEER intraoperative and perioperative OCT study. Imaging was performed via intraoperative OCT (iOCT) after lenticule apposition with complete air fill and after air-fluid exchange. OCT images were also obtained 1 day after surgery.
The researchers found the two most common indications for surgery were Fuchs’ dystrophy and pseudophakic bullous keratopathy, observed in 63% and 24% of eyes, respectively.
TIF was found to be visible 18 of 76 eyes on iOCT post-air fluid exchange, according to the researchers. Fourteen of the 18 eyes went on to develop TIO.
Overall, TIO was observed in 18 of 76 eyes, and TIF noted on iOCT was significantly associated with a higher postoperative rate of TIO, according to the researchers.
Among the 18 eyes with TIF on iOCT, 16 had resolution on OCT by 1 day postoperatively.
No significant differences in mean graft thickness were noted in eyes with and without TIF, according to the researchers.
