The Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System has been approved by Health Canada to treat patients with severe to profound outer retinal degeneration, according to a press release from Second Sight Medical Products.

The Argus II induces visual perception in blind patients with electrical pulses to stimulate the retina's remaining cells, which results in perceptions of light patterns in the brain, the release said.

"Today's approval enables us to expand our international network of Centers of Excellence, which offer the Argus II retinal implant, into additional Canadian provinces beyond Ontario," Robert Greenberg, MD, PhD, president and CEO of Second Sight, said in the release.

The company is recruiting additional centers in metropolitan areas and plans to apply for reimbursement in provinces where centers are established, the release said.
