The development of a glaucoma-specific item bank identified 10 quality-of-life domains that can be used as clinical trial endpoints, according to a study.
To develop the content of the patient-reported outcomes item bank, the researchers considered extant items in currently available glaucoma-specific instruments, qualitative literature, patient focus groups and interviews, item classification and selection, expert review and revision of items, and cognitive patient interviews.
The researchers identified 737 unique items; 247 extant items were from patient-reported outcomes instruments, 14 items were from qualitative articles, and 476 items were from focus groups and semi-structured interviews. After items were removed and refined and cognitive interviews were performed, 342 unique items comprised 10 quality-of-life domains: activity limitation, mobility, visual symptoms, ocular surface symptoms, general symptoms, convenience, health concerns, emotional well-being, social issues and economic issues.
“The next step will be to collect data on the items in the item bank and to use Rasch analysis to refine and calibrate items under each of the 10 domains. The item bank will undergo rigorous validation and reliability testing before it is made available for use in clinical trials,” the study authors said.
