CHICAGO —  Carl Zeiss Meditec announced during a press briefing here that it has entered into a non-exclusive commercial collaboration with Abbott Medical Optics in the United States.

Ludwin Monz, PhD, MBA, president and CEO of Carl Zeiss Meditec, said Zeiss’ cataract surgery products will also continue to be available through the existing Zeiss distribution channel.

The collaboration, effective Oct. 17, 2014, allows Abbott to offer the Zeiss cataract surgery portfolio, including the Zeiss Cataract Suite Marketplace, according to Monz.

The company also introduced the Visuphor 500 digital phoropter, the Visuscreen 100/500 acuity charts, the portable Visuscout 100 fundus camera for retinal examinations and the Visuplan 500 non-contact tonometer for IOL testing here at the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting.

“Basic diagnostics is particularly important in the practices of ophthalmologists and optometrists. The very first examination of a new patient lays the foundation for the subsequent success of the therapy,” Monz said in a press release. “Therefore, we wish to provide doctors with diagnostic solutions that deliver all important examination results reliably and efficiently.”

The Visuphor 500 and Visuscreen 100/500 can be connected wirelessly, used with panel PC or iPad, according to remarks made at the Zeiss press briefing. In addition, the Visuscout 100 acts as the imaging companion and allows for portable retinal imaging, according to the briefing.

Eye care providers may start with a single device and supplement with additional equipment to utilize the complete Essential Line suite, Monz said.
