AAO alert: Alcon associate under routine isolation, observation after possible Ebola exposure
CHICAGO — An Alcon associate is under precautionary routine isolation and observation after a possible exposure to Dallas nurse, Nina Pham, who treated Ebola patient Thomas Duncan, according to an alert issued by the American Academy of Ophthalmology here.
The following is an excerpt from an email alert issued by AAO:
“According to Alcon, the associate has not shown any signs or symptoms of the Ebola virus. The company also confirmed with the Academy that the associate is in an administrative role at Alcon, one that is not customer-facing, nor does it involve the manufacturing or distribution of its products. Therefore, after extensive consultation with public health experts, Alcon assures the ophthalmic community that there is no risk of exposure to the virus from Alcon products or other Alcon associates.”
The statement also notified Academy members that the Alcon associate did not demonstrate any symptoms of Ebola upon reporting to work last week.
Furthermore, the Academy reported there are no preregistered attendees from the impacted countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone to the AAO 2014 meeting here in Chicago.
